On a hot summer evening in New York City on August 16, 2006, the WWE Universe chose and then promptly welcomed Layla El as its newest Diva. In the heart of Times Square, the winner of the 2006 WWE Diva Search celebrated what would be the first of countless successes over the course of her nine-year career in sports-entertainment. Today, after almost a decade of dazzling WWE fans in every pocket of the globe, the former Divas and Women's Champion announces her retirement from WWE.

Backstage Talk On AJ Lee's Sudden Retirement #MMBWWE
It's been noted via other outlets that AJ Lee likely knew she was going to retire from WWE going into the WrestleMania 31 match with Paige against The Bella Twins. It's believed that AJ didn't inform WWE officials of her retirement until after the WrestleMania match was over because they probably would have had her lose if they knew she was retiring so soon.
