Sixers stakeholder Jason Levien is leaving the team to join the Memphis Grizzlies as CEO and managing partner.
The announcement will come on Monday, according to the Grizzlies.
Levien was instrumental in brokering the deal that put together the Sixers' current ownership group.
He began his NBA career as a player agent and moved on to become a team executive with the Sacramento Kings and the MLS team, DC United. Levien will work as the Grizzlies' director of basketball operations with general manager Chris Wallace and will have final say on personnel, according to reports.
"I’m honored to be part of such a dynamic and potential-filled opportunity here in Memphis," Levien said in a statement released by the Grizzlies. "I appreciate what a special role the Grizzlies and FedExForum play in the Memphis community and I know that we will build successfully on the foundation already in place."
In addition to putting together the deal for the group headed by Josh Harris to purchase the 76ers from Comcast-Spectacor, Levien also was the deal broker in piecing together the group that purchased the Grizzlies last June.
Outside of the sports business, Levien also worked as a clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit, an attorney at Williams & Connolly and Greenberg Traurig LP and as an Adjunct professor at the University of California Berkeley Law School and at the University of Michigan.
Levien also was political strategist and was credited as the speechwriter for the Keynote Speech at the 2000 Democratic Convention in Los Angeles, delivered by Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford Jr.
Led by 34-year-old billionaire Robert Pera, the former Apple engineer, the Grizzlies' ownership group includes entertainer Justin Timberlake, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway.
"Jason and I share a vision for building a world-class team on and off-the-court," Pera said. "He has my complete trust, confidence and support in how best to lead our organization's efforts."
