The Phillies on Monday traded outfielder Ben Francisco to the Blue Jays for minor-league reliver Frank Gailey.
Gailey, a lefty, went a combined 5-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 45 combined appearances last season for single-A Dunedin and double-A New Hampshire. In 175 minor league games (all but one in relief), Gailey is 23-15 with a 2.45 ERA.
Selected in the 23rd round of the 2007 draft, the 26-year-old Gailey is a Philadelphia native, having attended Archbishop Carroll High School and West Chester University.
Francisco’s final at-bat with the Phillies was a memorable one. He hit the sixth playoff pinch-hit home run in team history, a three-run shot that gave the Phils a 3-2 victory over St. Louis in Game 3 of the NLDS.
The 30-year-old Francisco spent parts of three seasons with the Phils after coming over in the deal that initially brought Cliff Lee to Philadelphia in 2009.
