Phillies Place Polanco On DL

The Phillies on Friday placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation and activated closer Ryan Madson from the DL.

Bothered by the ailing back, the slumping Polanco is hitting .274 this season with four home runs and 39 RBIs. His batting average has dropped nearly 50 points since June 1 and nearly 70 points since May 23, when he ended the day batting .339.

Polanco's DL move is retroactive to July 5, meaning that he could potentially be activated by July 22 when the Phils begin their first homestand of the second half.

Madson has been out for nearly a month with a right-hand contusion. He most recently pitched a scoreless inning for Class A Clearwater on Wednesday but has not pitched in the majors since taking a grounder off his right hand on June 18.

In 31 games this season, Madson is 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA and 15 saves in 16 chances. He is one of three closers the Phillies have used this season in the absence of Brad Lidge.

Lidge, Madson and Polanco are now three of the 13 players the Phillies have had on the DL this season. The team has six players currently on the DL: Polanco, Lidge, Shane Victorino, Roy Oswalt, Joe Blanton and Jose Contreras.

The Phillies also officially recalled Vance Worley from the minors on Friday. He'll take the roster spot of Scott Mathieson, who was shipped back to Triple A on Sunday.
