PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Flyers completed two blockbuster deals on Thursday when they shipped team captain Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings and centre Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Carter was traded for a first- and third-round draft pick and forward Jakub Voracek. The first rounder is No. 8 overall in Friday’s NHL Entry Draft.
In exchange for Richards, the Kings sent forwards Wayne Simmonds and Brayden Schenn to the Flyers along with a second-round draft pick.
TSN reports that Philadelphia’s deal with Ilya Bryzgalov is also done. The Russian goaltender signed for nine years and US$51-million.
In the matter of three hours, Philadelphia traded away both of their 2003 first-round picks, and two players considered the heart and soul of the organization.
The moves cleared up considerable cap space for Philadelphia. Carter’s contract has 11 years remaining that carries a cap hit of a little more than US$5.272 million.
Richards has 10 years remaining on his deal. His cap hit is $5.75-million.
Statistically, the two 26-year-olds enjoyed solid years in Philadelphia.
Last season, Carter scored 36 goals with 30 assists in 80 games, while Richards had 23 goals and 43 assists in 81 games.
In Schenn and Simmonds, Philadelphia lands youth and grit.
Simmonds — a restricted free agent centre — is 22 years old and had 14 goals and 16 assists with 75 penalty minutes in 80 games with the Kings last season. He was selected by the Kings in the second round of the 2007 draft.
Signed to an entry-level deal, Schenn, 19, played in nine games with the Kings last season collecting two assists. The bulk of his time was spent in the WHL where he scored 22 goals and added 35 assists in 29 games with the Saskatoon Blades and Brandon Wheat Kings.
Schenn, a right-winger, was picked fifth overall by the Kings in the 2009 entry draft.
